April 2011 - Lined alcove with shelves

In a beautiful mid-Victorian flat, furnished with a selection of solid oak modern pieces.

The alcove shows a roughly stripped scots pine frame, and the natural stone wall painted in white and 5 shelves (18mm), stained spruce.

The new alcove frame, stripped and oiled, shows an all American white oak lining and shelves (27mm), finished with a neutral wax.

The flow of a line

"It never ceases to amaze me how, over thousands of years, generations of potters, metalworkers, and glassblowers all over the world have gravitated towards similar bowl forms." said Richard Raffan in one the few woodturning books he wrote. They are good references.

My bowls - sycamore, oak, ash, jarrah, ash.

Over the past year, Ralph Curry has been teaching me woodturning. It's a practise I could not imagine learning in nicer conditions. Ralph built his lathe - this one and others - years ago and turned bowls for daily use that found home everywhere in the country.
